What Affects Borehole Drilling Cost?
Understanding what drives the price of a borehole helps you budget and compare quotes. Here are the key cost drivers, with the rates published in 2026 price guides.
Last reviewed . Figures are market indications from published South African price guides, not quotes.
Drilling Depth
High ImpactDrilling is charged per metre drilled: R300 - R750 per metre in standard ground and R600 - R1,500 in hard rock. At those rates, drilling alone for 40m is R12,000 - R30,000 in standard ground and 80m is R24,000 - R60,000. Casing, testing and the pump system do not scale the same way, but cable and riser pipe added about R85 per metre of depth in one dated 2026 quote.
A survey and records from nearby boreholes help predict depth. One 2026 guide says most Gauteng residential boreholes are 80 to 120m deep.
Rock Type / Geology
High ImpactHard rock such as granite and quartzite drills more slowly and wears bits faster, which is why published hard-rock rates (R600 - R1,500 per metre) run well above standard ground (R300 - R750). One guide puts the northern Johannesburg granite belt at R1,000 - R1,500 per metre.
Ask the driller what rock they expect and whether the rate changes if they meet harder formations.
Region
Medium ImpactPublished per-metre figures by city: Johannesburg R350 - R650, Pretoria R380 - R700, Cape Town R380 - R750 and Durban R320 - R600. The differences come from rock type, water-table depth, local competition and transport.
Compare at least two or three quotes for the same scope.
See prices by province and city →Drilling Method
Medium ImpactRotary air percussion is commonly used for hard rock, while soft or unstable ground may need rotary mud drilling. Your geology decides which method is needed, and the method affects the rate.
Ask which method the driller plans to use and why.
How borehole drilling works →Casing Requirements
Medium ImpactCasing is often charged separately from drilling: R400 - R700 per metre installed in published guides, on the metres actually cased. One dated 2026 KZN South Coast quote lists 177mm steel casing at R350 per metre, and a Cape Town guide gives R350 - R600 per metre in the Northern Suburbs and Winelands. A 40m cased section is R16,000 - R28,000 at R400 - R700.
Ask for casing material, diameter, number of metres and the rate per metre.
Borehole casing guide →Site Access and Mobilisation
Low-Medium ImpactDrilling rigs are truck-mounted and need vehicle access. Mobilisation is usually its own line: one Cape Town guide cites about R3,500 for rig set-up and a dated KZN South Coast quote lists R7,000 for site establishment. One price guide puts extra transport for remote or hard-to-reach sites at R2,000 - R10,000.
Ask for mobilisation, fuel surcharges and any minimum charge in writing. Some companies charge a minimum fee even if water is found early.
Dolomite and Local Rules
Low-Medium ImpactSome areas need an assessment before drilling. One guide puts a dolomite stability assessment at R5,000 - R15,000 and 2 to 4 weeks. Another says drilling is prohibited without a certified professional assessment in more than 20 Tshwane suburbs, and lists a City of Johannesburg consent application fee of R1,185 (as of 2025).
Check your municipality rules before a rig is booked.
Permits and regulations guide →Dry or Low-Yield Holes
Medium ImpactA survey improves the odds of finding water but no survey can promise it. Most drilling contractors charge per metre drilled, so a hole that stays dry or yields little can still be billed.
Ask how a dry or low-yield hole is charged before work starts.
Pump Type and Size
Medium ImpactPump unit retail prices run from about R3,400 (0.37 to 0.55 kW) to about R6,600 (2.2 kW). A supplied and installed pump system is R12,000 - R30,000 for holes up to about 60m and R15,000 - R45,000 for deep or high-flow holes. Solar systems cost more: R18,000 - R120,000 installed, depending on size.
Wait for yield test results before buying a pump. A pump that draws water faster than the borehole recovers can run dry.
Borehole pump prices →Storage Tank and Pressure System
Low-Medium ImpactA storage tank is R5,000 for 2,500 litres up to R20,000 for 10,000 litres. A pressure tank, switch, piping and electrical work add roughly R5,000 - R19,000 in one guide (pressure tank R2,000 - R8,000, switch R500 - R2,000, piping R1,000 - R5,000, electrical R1,500 - R4,000).
Ask whether the pump quote includes these items.
Water Quality Treatment
Low-Medium ImpactFiltration or treatment systems are R5,000 (basic) to R20,000 (advanced). Not every borehole needs treatment, but a SANS 241 laboratory test (R1,450 - R3,000) tells you what the water needs.
Test the water before you buy a treatment system.
